Open the first photo album you can find — real or virtual, your call — and stop at the first picture of yourself you see there . Tell us the story of that photo.

I am smiling.

My hair is loose cascading down my shoulders. My lips are red. My eyeliner faded. But my eyes are bright with excitement. I am the one holding the camera out to fit us both in the frame. You are pressed up against me. Your chin tilted back with a mock attitude of superiority.

We are happy and goofy and together.

The picture was taken not that long ago. We are at the zoo. It was boiling hot but we enjoyed it with the same gumption. Just to walk by your side with your sweaty hand clasped in mine is a treasure I will never take for granted. To stare at wacky animals and laugh at your jokes and reenactments of movie scenes is an added bonus.

In that moment, the world is perfect. It is just you and me. Smiling at the world.
